Sensitivity education and character building are topics typically associated with Human Resources (HR) and Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs). However, psychology provides evidence that four distinct character strengths can have a positive impact on organizational culture and safety interventions. This session will explore an alternative and indirect method of improving safety culture by integrating character-strength building into a previously established safety curriculum. The speaker will provide examples of how this approach is being implemented throughout the City of Atlanta, discuss ways to incorporate character building into an organization's safety processes, and will provide practical intervention strategies for attendees to try.

Title: Getting Strangers to Respond to Dangers (CERT Topic): In this session, we discussed teaming or teamwork "on the fly". CERT programs are comprised of volunteer community members, most of whom do not know each other. Conflict can arise when we are not familiar with our team members. This session outlines characteristics of teaming and how to promote an interdependent mindset.

Title: May The Forces Be With You (Training and Education Integration): Sensitivity education and character building are topics typically associated with Human Resources (HR) and Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs). However, psychology provides evidence that four distinct character strengths can have a significantly positive impact on organizational culture and safety programs. This session will explore an alternative and indirect method of improving safety culture by integrating character strength building into a previously established safety curriculum. The speaker will provide examples of how this approach is being implemented at the City of Atlanta, discuss ways to incorporate character building into an organization's safety processes, and will provide useful tips and tricks for attendees to try.

    Psychological Ergonomics:

The relationship between psychosocial factors and negative employee outcomes (i.e. sick leave, turnover, hostile work environments, etc.) has been a popular topic for research and discussion. Similar to a physical ergonomics program, a psychosocial ergonomics program is a systematic process that communicates mental health support needs to ensure that adequate and feasible solutions to mental health risks can be implemented to improve the workplace. For example, where tradition ergonomics programs focus on posture, wrist positioning, and eye strain; psychosocial ergonomics focuses on workload, interpersonal communication (e.g. conflict resolution and problem solving), and intrapersonal needs (i.e. feeling valued, feeling heard, and support from management/leadership). The two most essential pieces of any successful workplace program are leadership commitment and employee involvement. The purpose of a psychosocial ergonomics program is to reduce distress in the workplace, thus improving productivity, reducing turnover, reducing lost time, and increasing interdependence. The good news is, we don’t need a new and expensive program provided by a company or consultant that is unfamiliar with our organizational vision, workforce, and company culture. The speaker will discuss program components and provide tips on how to indirectly implement strategies into pre-existing curriculum and/or programs. Attendees can expect to learn how to define Psychosocial Ergonomics, perform an assessment, describe the benefits of a healthy Psychosocial Ergonomics Program, and implement effective implementation methods.
