Community Groupspreparedneighborhoods.com :: FEMA asked me to present my book "Prepared Neighborhoods: Creating Resilience One Street at a Time" on its first birthday at their biannual training symposium in Emmitsburg. The book details the connections between individual preparedness and the much larger work happening at the municipality and state levels, leveraging neighborhoods as the sweet spot with group resilience occurs.
bainbridgeprepares.org :: The NGO I founded in 2011 has matured into a unique three-way partnership between the NGO, a municipality, and a fire district with over 20 citizen-led teams. We've built the real world application of FEMA's "whole community" doctrine. As the Board Chair, my primarily responsibility is replication of our successful organizational model in other towns throughout the country.
scottjames.me :: After leaving Microsoft and founding multiple benefit corporations, I now advise other executives on their corporations (both for- and non-profit), particularly as it relates to preparedness and sustainability.

SummaryBusinessWeek named Scott James as one of America’s Most Promising Social Entrepreneurs and Forbes Magazine profiled him as a Game Changer.
The products from his companies have been featured in publications as diverse as Oprah’s O Magazine, National Geographic, Parents Magazine, the Washington Post, Outside Magazine, and US News & World Report. His film projects range from the opening shorts at the United Nations Climate Change Summits (Producer Lyn Lear and Director Louie Schwartzberg) to the breakthrough nature-based series on Netflix (title series: “Moving Art”).
Scott was awarded a Governor’s Award of Excellence in Service by the state of Washington for his nonprofit community preparedness work, Bainbridge Prepares. He was recently asked by FEMA to present his book – Prepared Neighborhoods: Creating Resilience One Street at a Time – at their national training symposium. It is available to purchase everywhere.
Scott previously worked in the high tech sector, including Visio and Microsoft, and completed degrees at Baylor University and University of Notre Dame. Scott’s training also includes permaculture, Transition Towns, CERT, Wilderness First Responder, as well as mindful movement techniques such as MovNat, AcroYoga, and vinyasa yoga…all of which tend to be reflected in his work. He lives with his wife, children, and dogs on an island micro-farm in the Pacific Northwest.
His organizations tend to either focus on “people helping people” such as Fair Trade companies, or “people helping planet” (which of course also help people) such as organizations focused on the climate crisis. Scott also does 1:1 sessions with top performers and facilitates corporate retreats for small teams of senior thinkers, particularly among the social entrepreneurship set.
