SummaryBusinessWeek named Scott James as one of America’s Most Promising Social Entrepreneurs and Forbes Magazine profiled him as a Game Changer.
FEMA asked him to present his book "Prepared Neighborhoods: Creating Resilience One Street at a Time" on its first birthday at their biannual training symposium in Emmitsburg, MD. The book details the connections between individual preparedness and the much larger work happening at the municipality and state levels, leveraging neighborhoods as the sweet spot with group resilience occurs. Learn more at preparedneighborhoods.com.
Scott was awarded a Governor’s Award of Excellence in Service by the state of Washington for his nonprofit community preparedness work, Bainbridge Prepares. The NGO he founded in 2011 has matured into a unique three-way partnership between the nonprofit, a municipality, and a fire district with over 20 citizen-led teams. It is the country’s best real world application of FEMA's "whole community" doctrine. As the Founder and current Board Chair, Scott’s primarily responsibility is replication of the successful organizational model in other towns throughout the country. Learn more at bainbridgeprepares.org.
The products from his for-profit companies have been featured in publications as diverse as Oprah’s O Magazine, National Geographic, Parents Magazine, the Washington Post, Outside Magazine, and US News & World Report. His film projects range from the opening shorts at the United Nations Climate Change Summits (Producer Lyn Lear and Director Louie Schwartzberg) to the breakthrough nature-based series on Netflix (title series: “Moving Art”). Scott creates organizations which tend to either focus on “people helping people” or “people helping planet” (which of course also helps people). He also does 1:1 advising with top performers and facilitates corporate retreats for small teams of senior thinkers, particularly as it relates to preparedness and sustainability. Learn more at scottjames.me.
Scott previously worked in the high tech sector, including Visio and Microsoft, and completed degrees at Baylor University and University of Notre Dame. Scott’s training also includes permaculture, Transition Towns, CERT, Wilderness First Responder, as well as mindful movement techniques such as MovNat, AcroYoga, and vinyasa yoga…all of which tend to be reflected in his work. He lives with his wife, children, and dogs on an island micro-farm in the Pacific Northwest. -
