Climate AdaptationDisposable City: Miami’s Future on the Shores of Climate Catastrophe
During any given hurricane season, the City of Miami stands a chance of being gutted by a massive storm surge. Studies predict such an outcome could displace up to a million people. The Army Corps of Engineers proposed reducing the risk of such an event by building a wall that would act as a barrier to the wind driven water. Fearing that it might impact their real estate values, locals balked at the idea. Ultimately, the wall was never built. But the conflict around its proposal serves to illuminate the tough choices cities and policymakers face when attempting to adapt urban infrastructure to a rapidly changing climate. -

Preparation and Content
I think the speaker was very comfortable talking about his process and content. I enjoyed that he spoke not only about the technical portions of his topic but anecdotally as well. The speaker was very good at relating relevant examples etc. Perhaps a few terms should have been defined or explained a little more. He used the term Red Lining several times and I am aware of that as I also have a real estate sales license but I am not sure everyone would really get that term. He did go on to give it some context by discussion socioeconomic factors, so it was pretty easy to draw the inference.
Presentation and Delivery
I enjoy the topic. Climate changes and the need for Climate Adaptation and prediction of future conditions etc needs to be on all emergency managers, planners, city managers and elected officials minds. This issue will have far reaching effects across many industries and our government structures. Migration patterns, social constructs etc will all be impacted and therefore I find his perspectives and others doing work in this space interesting. The speaker was very good at respond to and fielding the audience questions.
